5 Simple Tips for Writing a Great Resume Building Your Future Now
5 Simple Tips for Writing a Great Resume Building Your Future Now Writing a great resume can be time- consuming, but when you have it all polished and ready to roll it can be your ticket to landing you that coveted interview. But sometimes we stick to the same format and end up sending the same resume everytime we go on the job hun. We tweak it a bit and then send it out without really thinking what we sent out. One of the best tips is keeping it simple and short. Here are a few more simple tips to help you write a great resume: Only include revelent information Its so easy to keep lots of information on our resumes becausewell..its our resume. We dont want to leave out any information about our skills or work history and before you know it the a resume is dangerously creeping towards three pages. One of the most important things to keep in mind is only including relevant information on your resume especially if you are applying for a very specific role. Use action words Action words drive your resume and make your experience come alive. Spearheading, leading, Encouraged, Actioned are all words that establish you are a doer. Dont be afraid to use these action words. Use Sans Serif or Serif Fonts This might be a small thing, but using particular fonts can mean the difference between having and not having an interview. Keep font size between 9 to 12 point and use only Sans Serif font if you are applying online and Serif font in person. The Sans Serif has no tail and is easily read by scanning programs while the Serif gives the font a nice look and great for in-person resume drop-off. Times New Roman is a popular example of a Serif font. Make Use of White Space One of the easiest mistakes to make when writing a resume is trying to cram in as much information as possible. Can you imagine someone trying to read a resume so dense with words there is no time for their eyes to rest? White space can help make your resume easier to read. Keep it to One Page Sometimes two pages might be ok, but usually one is best. As noted in the introduction: keep it short and simple. Typically someone reviewing your resume will do so for about 5 to 7 seconds! That means you need to keep all information on one page. If not, your resume might not make the cut. Image: Lukas Bieri

Personal Brands Let Me Entertain You - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Personal Brands Let Me Entertain You - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Weâre having a BBQ with about 50 people up at my house in a few weeks. Itâll be in August, which weirdly enough, is when about a full third of my family and friends are born. So itâs always a big party, featuring crowd faves like ribs, beer, and cake. What could be bad? Nothing, if I survive my drive to entertain. Among the characteristics of my personal brand is âentertaining,â and not just for guests at home. I speak, train, and teach at venues where audiences are no longer satisfied by being educated or enlightened. âAdult learnersâ must be simultaneously entertained as they graze on facts and analysis. Someone coined a word for what we do now in the knowledge transfer business: âedutainment.â I dont have a casual relationship with this concept, because I believe it the single most important factor in moving people forward. With all my might, I relentlessly edu-tain. Authentic qualities come through Personal brands arenât something you can turn off and on at will. Qualities that are authentically you will come through in most every venue. For example, I am known for throwing really great parties because I believe that you must entertain guests. I see it as part of the job when you host a party. I have developed a formula. I like to splurge on a real bartender. He makes signature drinks and margaritas with that tiny shaved ice, like Slurpees (I bought the machine). We have live music (I live in LA where musicians are desperate for an audience, much less a pay check). And I always add in something novel to up the cool factor and kind of make it a scene. This summer my cool factor is futons instead of chaise lounges. Itâs got that Beverly Hills Hotel cabana, Hollywoodâs Hotel Roosevelt bottle service cum Vegas Rehab with beautiful people lounging vibe. This is where it gets ugly. The best place to buy cheap futons is IKEA. If thereâs a store thatâs more grueling to move through, filled with more screaming children and surly customer no-service people at the checkout, then it must be in hell. Other than hell, which I can only imagine is IKEA without air-conditioning, there could be no other place where you are trapped with hundreds of other lost souls, as your brain is assaulted with the smell of damp Swedish meatballs and you try to find your way out from the moment you get in. On the floors you see arrows, but they return you to the same places you came from. Okay, it gets worse. We persevere, gripping our soiled list of product numbers, plus awkwardly juggling a tower of assorted doo-dads we picked up on the way down. How could you resist? They force you to pass every single item ever made in Sweden on the way, three stories down, to the self-serve warehouse. We arrive at the beginning of the end. We make our way through a maze of towering aisles and pull hundreds of pounds of futon assemblage and mattresses off the shelves, only to push them around in a side-less steel cart that hits you right in the curve between your leg and ankle. Itâs still not as bad as itâs going to get. We pay after fumbling with what looks like a taser, and is actually an optical scanner that only works at a very specific distance and angle. We wobble our way out to the pick-up zone. Therein lies the difference between IKEA and hell. Above our heads â" like lettuce in a supermarket â" is a power shower of wet mist pouring out of a cable strung all across the overhang between the store and the curb. This is where you must wait with your cardboard and plastic covered, yet to be assembled furniture. Now we know itâs not hell, because were wet and freezing. We are literally standing in a monsoon with our cardboard shack and plastic tarp wrapped mattresses, all soaking wet. âItâs to keep you cool,â says the lone attendant. Now if you donât know, Los Angeles is about 78 degrees by day and 65 degrees by evening during most of the summer, with no drag of humidity. This is not Phoenix, Orlando, Houston or anyplace where having buckets of water thrown at you is really the only way to manage your body temperature outdoors. Blame it on my personal brand. I endured because I must entertain. The show must go on. The mantra doesnât waver when you are authentically what you are, no matter where you are. In case you are navel gazing about your own personal brand, ask yourself this. What do you endure that tells you who you are? Author: Nance Rosen is the author of Speak Up! Succeed. 2 Tiny Mindset Shifts to Land Your Dream Job - Classy Career Girl
2 Tiny Mindset Shifts to Land Your Dream Job Enjoy this sneak peek inside Love Your Career Formula Prep School â" on sale now for only $25! Audios, bonuses and worksheets. This is such a steal! In order to be successful in finding your dream job, you need to learn both the things you can see â" like how to update a resume, create a LinkedIn profile, create a business plan and nail an interview â" and the things you canât see, like how to believe in yourself, how to stay motivated and how to conquer your fears. Whatâs the missing 1% that will make all the difference? Mindset is what is missing in most âjob searchâ and âcareer coachingâ training programs that makes ours WAY different. Mindset is where we start and what will get you the success you desire. If you take all the job search actions but donât work on your mindset, you will not get the success you want. Here are two tiny mindset shifts to help you land your dream job: 1. Focus On the Job You Want, Not the Job You Hate You may have heard of the law of attraction. It got a lot of publicity with the book and movie, The Secret. The law of attraction says that everything coming in your life, you are attracting. You have to make it clear in your mind what you want because you attract what you think about most. Thoughts become things. If you focus on what you want, youâll get more of it. If you focus on what you donât want, youâll get more of it. How does this apply to your dream job search? If you focus on the job you hate, you will never get unstuck. If you focus on how terrible you are at interviews and how unlucky you are, you will never get unstuck. Instead, focus on getting the job you WANT and stay positive. 2. Focus on What is Going Right, Not What is Going Wrong When you arenât grateful, you wonât receive more in return. Gratitude is all about giving thanks. Ungratefulness is taking the things in your life for granted. You are taking instead of giving if you are ungrateful. Donât focus on hating your job. Be grateful for it. I know itâs hard but it is for some use (money to pay your bills, house over your head, ability to work while job searching or ability to learn). If you are unemployed, be grateful for your unemployment because you can focus on job searching full time! If youâre grateful for the job you have, even if its not your dream job, things will begin to change so you enjoy your job more and opportunities for you will suddenly appear. Another way to show gratitude in your life is to count your blessings. When youâre grateful for the things you have, no matter how small they may be, you will see those things instantly increase. You will be happier when you count your blessings. The more gratitude you feel, the happier you will be. Studies show people who practice gratitude have closer relationships, are more connected to family and friends and have people look upon them more favorably. Even being thankful for your boss will give you more patience, understanding, compassion and kindness. You will forget about the things you use to complain about them if you are thankful for them.
